How to Write an Online Dating Profile That Will Get You Noticed

When entering the intimidating world of online dating, one of the biggest challenges is writing your online profile. Anyone who has written a cover letter, academic personal statement or biography for their company’s website knows how hard it is to talk about yourself without sounding pompous, boring, or even worse, obnoxious. So how do you attract the future love of your life, when you don’t have a clue what to write? The key is to think about your profile as an advertisement for you. Keep it short, sweet and snappy, but make sure that you express your winning personality through it all. Before you know it, your in box will be flooded with responses from Mr. or Ms. Right. Read on to learn how to write an onine dating profile that will get you noticed.

Things You’ll Need:

  • A computer
  • A friend
  • A pad of paper
  • A pen
  • A digital camera

Step 1:
Grab a good friend, a pen and paper and have a brainstorming session about you. Write down all of the things you and your friend can think of that make you who you are.

Step 2:
Start filling out the online profile form, answering the easiest questions, like your professional field, education, hair and eye color first. This will help you get your creative juices flowing for the notorious “About Me” section.

Step 3:
Write your “About Me” section using the brainstorming notes you took with your friend. Make sure to include interesting details about yourself to make your profile stand out. Remember that there are a lot of formulaic profiles out there with really meaningless statements like “I like to have fun” and “I work hard but I play hard too.” Your profile should make potential dates want to learn more about you, so having a little intrigue in your online dating profile will do the trick. For example, you could write “My friends always tell me I should write a book on all the strange but true experiences that seem to follow me wherever I go.” It will make date seekers curious and it will give you something to talk about on your first date.

Step 4:
Upload your profile picture, one that really looks like you, to the site. All too often online daters think they have found their perfect match only to find out in person they look completely different. That’s false advertising and in business, that’s a real no-no. You should apply the same rules to your profile: sure, the picture can be of you looking your best, but it should look like the present you, not you when you were 10 years younger or 10 pounds thinner.

Step 5:
Once you have written your profile and uploaded your picture, it’s time to come up with a good title for your profile. Think of the title as your own personal slogan. Again, avoid overused titles like “Looking for love” or “Single and Sexy.” Your title sums up who you are and what you want in a catchy way. A great place to look for inspiration is in the titles of your favorite songs. A big fan of Bonnie Rait and love good conversation? “Let’s Give ‘em Something to Talk About” just might be the title for you.

Step 6:
Take a deep breath and submit your profile. Now it’s time for the fun to begin.
